10 Best Building Product Stocks To Watch Right Now

It’s not easy to operate in a business where competition is fierce and pricing power is nonexistent. Just ask Moneygram International (MGI), whose shares are in freefall this morning after it was downgraded by Piper Jaffray.

Why did Piper Jaffray’s Michael Grondahl and Dain Haukos downgrade Moneygram to Neutral from Overweight? Let them count the ways:

We are downgrading [Moneygram] as we believe it will struggle to perform in an increasingly competitive marketplace where price cuts and compliance requirements could suppress revenues and increase expenses. As such, margins remain under pressure. Recall, [Moneygram’s] biggest competitor, Western Union (WU), has cut its prices. Next, during the September quarter [Moneygram] saw its commission expense increase [1.7 percentage points year-over-year] to 47% of total revenues as it had to pay more to retain/acquire agents. Additionally, [Moneygram’s] compensation and benefits expense increased by 20% (~$11.4M) Y/Y partially as a result of increased headcount required to meet increased regulatory requirements. Lastly, we worry about a potential [Wal-Mart (WMT)] white label offering. We note [Wal-Mart] represented 27%
of MGI’s September quarter revenues.

There’s no denying Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) has been one of year’s top investment stories, with shares running up from less than $40 to more than $194 in just a few short months. But, as one might imagine, that 385% runup from TSLA creates something of a disconnect between the company and its share price. Time to head for the exit. Instead, a better use of that now-considerably-greater capital is a position in Digital Ally, Inc. (NASDAQ:DGLY) … a stock that’s also had a pretty good 2014, but has suffered more than a small setback since mid-September. Specifically, DGLY has pulled back from a peak price of $17.47 to a low of $9.88 as of Friday. But, it looks like that correction may have already come to an end.

China is set to ease the one child policy, something that could benefit Chinese stocks in general but be especially beneficial to insurance stocks like China Life Insurance Company Ltd (NYSE: LFC) and CNinsure Inc (NASDAQ: CISG) plus health care stocks like Mindray Medical International Ltd (NYSE: MR) and Concord Medical Services Hldg Ltd (NYSE: CCM). First, let’s be clear that China is NOT abolishing the one child policy as the changes will merely allow married couples to have two children if one spouse is an only child plus it will be up to China’s 34 province-level administrations to revise their laws and put the new policy into effect. Moreover, China’s family-planning bureaucracy employs more than 500,000 full-time workers and six million part-time workers all the way down to the village level to collect billions of dollars in fines and these bureaucrats have fought for years against policy changes – meaning they could throw up roadblocks if not placated. With that said, the insurance and health care sectors are two sectors with publicly Chinese stocks that look set to take advantage of the coming changes.

Advisors’ Opinion:

So it’s no surprise that on Thursday, none other than Bill Miller, the Chairman and CEO of Legg Mason Inc. (NYSE: LM) subsidiary LMM, told Bloomberg Television that “Bitcoin is like making a venture bet. The potential return is huge.”

Take a look at these other Nelson Peltz activist investing success stories:

H.J. Heinz: When Peltz got involved with Heinz, the stock had been slumping. He encouraged management to cut costs, buy back shares, and refocus the company on its core brands. By the time Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A, BRK.B) bought it last year for $23 billion, the stock had shot up 75%. “Management did a great job executing the turnaround, but Peltz was the catalyst for a lot of the change,” John Sini, a portfolio manager at Douglas C. Lane & Associates Inc., told Bloomberg News last year. “We are looking at this price now and saying, ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you.'” Ingersoll-Rand PLC (NYSE: IR): Peltz took an interest in this manufacturer of industrial and commercial goods back in mid-2012; the stock is up 77% since then. Among the moves Peltz influenced was a spinoff of IR’s security division, a $2 billion share repurchase program, and a 31% increase in the dividend. Legg Mason Inc. (NYSE: LM): Peltz owns 10% and has a seat on the board of the once high-flying financial firm that fell on hard times after the departure in 2008 of founder Raymond “Chip” Mason. Peltz helped get Legg Mason back on track by playing a leading role in selecting current Chief Executive Officer Joseph A. Sullivan, who assumed the top post in February 2013. The change in leadership worked; since December 2012, LM is up 75%.

This “Peltzing” is a phenomenon of particular interest now that he has a new top holding…

As he likes to say, “If the choice is between being first and being best, being first is better.” Mr. LeBaron founded Batterymarch Financial Management(LM) in Boston in 1969, investing mainly in small-company stocks, an opportunity almost nobody else was yet interested in. Batterymarch also pioneered quantitative investing, which uses statistical analysis–not human judgment–to pick stocks. In the 1970s, he says, every employee at the firm had three computers: “We had 90 machines when many firms didn’t have one.”

10 Best Building Product Stocks To Watch Right Now: (AUQ)

AuRico Gold Inc. engages in the exploration, development, and production of gold and silver projects and properties in Canada, Mexico, and Australia. Its principal property includes the Ocampo mine covering approximately 15,000 hectares located in Chihuahua State. The company was formerly known as Gammon Gold Inc. and changed its name to AuRico Gold Inc. in June 2011. AuRico Gold Inc. was founded in 1986 and is based in Toronto, Canada.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Selena Maranjian]

AuRico Gold (NYSE: AUQ  ) plunged 44%, having posted some disappointing results lately, and is also suffering from a competitive disadvantage, with its costs above those of some peers. On the plus side, though, the company recently initiated a dividend, which now yields about 2.8%.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Endeavour has also suffered company-specific issues. In January, the company lowered its production guidance for its key El Cubo mine. As Motley Fool contributor Christopher Barker noted at the time, former mine owner AuRico Gold (NYSE: AUQ  ) did a poor job of managing and operating El Cubo, leaving Endeavour with a massive opportunity to refurbish and expand the mine. Yet at least in the short run, the company still faces a big challenge there, especially in light of a recent fatality of a contractor employee at the mine last month.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Then there’s the company’s El Cubo mine, which it purchased in 2012 from AuRico Gold (NYSE: AUQ  ) with a combination of its own shares and cash for up to $250 million ($50 million is contingent on mine productivity over a three-year period). As fellow Fool Christopher Barker has commented previously, AuRico did a disastrous job of managing the El Cubo mine, which leaves Endeavour with a tremendous opportunity to reap the rewards of AuRico’s failures.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Wishing to provide investors with a means of acquiring additional shares of the gold miner’s common stock, AuRico Gold (NYSE: AUQ  ) said its board of directors declared it would be initiating — effective immediately — a dividend reinvestment plan that enables shareholders to reinvest the cash dividends paid on their stock.

There aren’t many Internet portals that can pride themselves on successfully climbing the industry ladder in only a decade. But, NetEase Inc. ADR (NTES) is one of them. Ever since the Chinese gaming market exploded into a multi-billion dollar business, this online game operator has managed to reach its competitors SINA Corp. (SINA) and Sohu.com Inc. (SOHU), via an extensive brand portfolio of in-house and licensed games. Some of the core online games include Fantasy Westward Journey, Westward Journey Online II and Ghost II.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One Internet gaming player that’s starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Sohu.com (SOHU), which is a Chinese online media, search, gaming, community and mobile service group. This stock has been in play with the bulls so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 51%.

If you take a look at the chart for Sohu.com, you’ll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong over the last two months, with shares moving higher from its low of $60.01 to its recent high of $73.28 a share. During that uptrend, shares of SOHU have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of SOHU within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SOHU if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $73.28 a share to its gap down day high from October at $75.48 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.26 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then SOHU will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from October that started near $83 a share.

Traders can look to buy SOHU off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $68.84 a share, or near more support at $67.50 a share. One can also buy SOHU off strength once it starts to take out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Alamy Companies can make brilliant moves, but there are also times when things don’t work out quite as planned. From a software giant’s dream CEO candidate telling them to keep dreaming, to the world’s consumer tech leader at last getting its smartphone into the hands of the world’s largest wireless carrier, here’s a rundown of the week’s best and worst results in the business world. Amazon.com (AMZN) — Winner The leading online retailer was a loser in last week’s column after its reputation took a hit in Europe. But it bounced back this week after Jeff Bezos went on “60 Minutes” Sunday and offered up a future of drone-shipped deliveries. We need to be realistic. A fleet of unmanned drones delivering shiny new Kindle Fire tablets isn’t going to happen anytime soon. However, Bezos has once again positioned Amazon.com on the leading edge of e-tail. The maneuver got the media talking about Amazon, and that’s free advertising during peak shopping season — even if the drones never land on your doorstep. J.C. Penney (JCP) — Loser The struggling department store chain can’t seem to catch a break. It had initially encouraged investors by posting a 10.1 percent improvement in comparable-store sales for the month of November — only the chain’s second positive month since the end of 2011. However, investors lost their enthusiasm when comparing that showing to the nearly 32 percent plunge in comparable-store sales during last year’s holiday quarter. In short, J.C. Penney still has a long way to go. Things got even more complicated on Thursday when the retailer revealed that it had received a letter of inquiry from the SEC. The trading regulator wants to take a closer look at J.C. Penney’s liquidity and financial statements. It’s just an inquiry, but it only creates more uncertainty.
